Twitter for iOS updated, improves search, removes three video services
Twitter for iOS has been updated, improving search and removing the capability to upload to certain video services. Twitter for iOS will now give you more user and topic suggestions for your search terms based on what happens in real time. You will also receive these suggestions when adding a username or hashtag to a tweet. Additionally, Top Tweets from major past events will pop up when you search terms related to that event.
This update also adds some smaller features. Viewing a webpage within an app, you can now pull the tweet with the link to the page up from the bottom of the screen for additional context. Conversations in the Details view now contain every reply to tweets in the conversation. Blocking a user in the app causes their tweets to disappear immediately.
Twitter also removed support for video uploads to three services. Mobypicture, Vodpod, and Posterous are gone from the app. No reason for the removal of these services was given in Twitter’s blog post on the update, though Posterous is shutting down soon. The removal of these services leave Telly and yFrog as the only video options left in the iOS app.

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser
Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.
At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.
It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.

Solavei starts carrying nano-SIMs for iPhone 5 nomads
Those who want to use an unlocked iPhone 5 in the US beyond AT&T have had relatively few places to go for an exodus, T-Mobile and Straight Talk usually being the two carriers on the short list. It's time to add a third: Solavei is now carrying nano-SIMs for its T-Mobile-based virtual network. There's not much mystery to what's involved after that, since you're still getting the singular, all-unlimited $49 plan and no guarantee of 3G when even T-Mobile's own spectrum refarming is still young. If you can live with those potential caveats for the sake of network and contract independence, Solavei is waiting.

Android Apps Spotlight: Remove that bloatware with Rom Cleaner
Whether it’s put there by your Telco or your device manufacturer, bloatware is a pain. Utilities that you’ll never use are taking up valuable storage space and system resources. If your device is rooted, you can manually remove a lot of this app-by-app. But every time you get an update for the ROM, you’ll have to manually remove them again – a time consuming process. ROM Cleaner automates the removal and allows you to manually specify what you want to remove and keep, if you so desire.
From a device manufacturer’s point of view, ROM Cleaner supports the Samsung Galaxy S3, Note II, Nexus, Tab 10.1, HTC Evo 4G, One X, One S, Desire HD , Sensation, Incredible S, and ASUS Transformer Prime. So flash your ROM update, run ROM Cleaner, and all that Samsung bloatware like Samsung Apps, S-Memo, S-Voice and all those default live wallpapers and widgets will be fully removed from your system, including all associated services. You can customise the status of what to remove and keep by editing a simple text file, should you so wish.
This utility saves me about 200mb in my System Rom area on my S3. It’s always nice to start with a nice clean and lean system.
Root required: Yes.

HTC One allows for 'distortion free recording' with dual membrane microphones
A little information about the HTC One and BoomSound has been made available today, concerning the quality of audio captured by HTC's latest device. Very few of us know or care about things like the membranes over the microphone in our smart phones, but we all know what it's like to record some audio and hear the dreadful "hiss" when we play it back. It's also a great way to ruin an otherwise awesome video you've recorded. And it happens far too often.
HTC has found a way to correct this by using a twin-membrane microphone. Normally, only one membrane is used on a standard smart phone microphone, which means the sounds you want to hear aren't really separated from the sounds you don't want to hear, and loud, high pressure sounds can cut the mic completely. When the software does its job of leveling and equalizing the audio, we're often left with a background hiss and low levels. HTC says the twin-membrane setup will help make that a thing of the past.
With two microphones, each having a twin-membrane setup, there's more room for the mic to capture the sound you're trying to record via the extra sensitive membrane, while the high pressure membrane can handle the loud sounds that would normally shut a sensitive mic down.
It sounds like a lot of voodoo that would be interesting to an audio engineer, but if HTC is correct and the outcome is "distortion free" then we all have reason to be excited. The release date is moving closer, and we'll soon be able to see for ourselves how well HTC's BoomSound operates.

Sharp may be close to receiving a $110 million boost from Samsung
Japan's Sharp has been struggling very publicly for some time now, and many reports indicate it's been looking outward for interested investors. While it already secured just such an arrangement with Qualcomm in December, rumors indicate attempts to reach a deal with Foxconn are in trouble and now Samsung is tabbed as a potential investor. Reuters and Japan's Nikkei cite sources indicating an official announcement could come sometime today regarding a 10 billion yen ($110 million) investment that would net the Korean electronics giant a three percent piece of Sharp. This deal would be mutually beneficial as Sharp gains a place to sell more of the LCDs it's capable of manufacturing, and Samsung cheaply expands its supply of panels, with a possibility of expanding their arrangement beyond LCDs in the future. We'll wait and see exactly what happens, but those IGZO screens Sharp is working on could be popping up in some unexpected places by the time it's all said and done.

Nikon Coolpix P330 packs 1/1.7-inch 12.2MP sensor and f/1.8 lens, we go hands-on
Caution Coolpix P310 owners: Nikon's latest point-and-shoot announcement may cause you to weep. The P330, as this year's flavor is to be called, offers a handful of upgrades over its predecessor, which launched in February of 2012. First, there's a new larger sensor on board, with 1/1.7 of an inch to work with, compared to 1/2.3 of an inch on last year's flavor. It'll also snap lower-resolution images, which may sound like a step backwards, but the 12.2-megapixel chip should offer superior image quality, along with a sensitivity range of ISO 80 through 12,800. Also new this year is RAW shooting -- a feature that could help position this mid-range model as a companion shooter for advanced amateurs and pros alike, for those occasions where a full-size rig wouldn't be practical. Finally, there's a 5x, 24-120mm f/1.8-5.6 optic with lens-based VR, a 3-inch TFT LCD, built-in GPS, 1080/30p and 60i video shooting and WiFi connectivity with the optional ($60) WU-1a module.
In an atypical move, Nikon graciously permitted us to photograph the P330 before its official debut, so we have some hands-on pics and impressions to share. The camera itself looks very similar to the P310 -- there's a nifty mode dial up top, along with a zoom toggle, control dial, power button, stereo mics and a pop-up flash. It's a solid-feeling compact, though Sony's RX100 does offer a more premium feel (and shooting experience to boot, but for nearly twice the price). Overall, the P330 is a solid entrant to Nikon's midrange lineup, but at $380, it's a fairly significant investment, too. Expect the camera to hit stores later this month in black and white -- you, dear reader, can thumb through our hands-on gallery for an up-close look today, though.
