RunCore rolls out Pro VI SSD for Ultrabooks in need of a jolt

RunCore rolls out Pro VI SSD for Ultrabooks in need of a jolt

Not to be left out of the Computex party, RunCore has just unveiled a 7mm-thick Pro VI solid-state drive to give new Ultrabooks a swift kick. The company is aiming squarely at the sunnier side of mid-range SSDs through a speedy JMicron controller that hits 550MB/s in reads, and a less aggressive but still brisk 380MB/s for writes. The SATA 6Gbps drive doesn't have any special tricks up its sleeves, but there's no doubt that it fits just about any ultrabook category: capacities swing from a very modest 32GB to a 512GB drive meant to take over from ho-hum spinning disks. While RunCore's customer list isn't public material, we wouldn't be surprised if a lot of extra-thin notebooks wending their way out of southeast Asia this year carry the Pro VI inside.

Kindle Fire Is First Android Tablet to Get HBO GO

The Kindle Fire is on an Android tablet hot streak. Photo: Wired

The Kindle Fire keeps blazing past other Android tablets. In addition to recent news that it owns more than 50 percent of the Android tablet market, the Fire is now the first Android tablet to get HBO GO.

Just in time for the new season of everyone’s favorite blood-sucking/soft-core porn show True Blood, the Kindle Fire has been accepted into the HBO GO-compatible device club. The app is available now in the Amazon app store and gives HBO subscribers instant access to some 1,400 of the network’s episodes.

In addition to receiving online episode access simultaneous to a show’s appearance over cable or satellite, HBO GO viewers get behind-the-scenes videos, episode re-caps and interviews about HBO shows. It’s a nice bit of therapy for anyone going through Game of Thrones withdrawals.

The Kindle Fire is the first Android tablet to get the HBO GO app. Currently the app is available for Android phones, iPhone, iPad, Roku, Samsung Smart TVs and the Xbox 360. HBO told Wired via email that an Android tablet edition of HBO GO is being developed for select tablets and should launch early this Summer.

Recently, a movement to lobby HBO to offer HBO GO access without the precondition of an HBO subscription has taken root on Twitter. The site Take My Money, HBO gives users a chance to declare via Twitter how much they would be willing to pay for a monthly subscription to HBO GO.

The network hasn’t made an official statement, but sent out a tweet this morning stating, “Love the love for HBO. Keep it up. For now, @RyanLawler @TechCrunch has it right” and points to a TechCrunch article that outlines the problems HBO would face if it went with an online subscription model. The most damning would be the loss of support of cable, satellite and IPTV distributors.

Even without an online subscription service, HBO is creeping onto more and more devices while it controls its own on-demand destiny. While exclusive rights to HBO GO for Android tablets will be short-lived for the Kindle Fire, it can only help to bolster the tablet’s market dominance.

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

ommwriter
I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I'm all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I'm of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it's beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing -- in case something like WriteMonkey's dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter's features and creative soundscapes.

Galaxy Exhilarate: $50 Smartphone Scoffs at Flagship Ambitions

Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate

The Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate. Photo: AT&T

The Galaxy S III this is not. On Tuesday, AT&T announced that it’s launching the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate on June 10 for $50 on a 2-year-contract.

This isn’t a flagship device capable of sending rumor mills into a tizzy. Nor is it a phone for tech writers to scrutinize in anticipation. On paper, the Exhilarate already looks very outdated, having more in common spec-wise with 2010′s Galaxy S and the T-Mobile exclusive Galaxy S Blaze 4G, two phones that sported 4-inch displays and dual-core CPUs, and ran on Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, which also made its debut in 2010.

Yes, the Exhilarate runs Android 2.3, an almost unthinkably outdated OS in this day and age of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). But on the up side, the Exhilarate features a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Scorpion processor. For cameras, the Exhilarate has a 5MP rear shooter capable of capturing 720p video, and a 1.3MP camera up front — the same set-up found on the Galaxy S Blaze 4G.

The new phone also features a back plate that AT&T says is made up of 80 percent recycled plastic. AT&T and Samsung didn’t specify how much RAM the Exhilarate has, or what the screen resolution is, and neither company was available for comment by press time.

Of course, the phone’s $50 price tag comes with a 2-year 4G data plan thorough AT&T, so while the entry price is less than that of the new $200 S III or the HTC One X, the monthly payout will be about the same.

Windows Phone Has 100,000 Apps Now. Is That Impressive or Embarrassing? [Windows Phone]

Tesla delivers first Model S a little early, EVs take a big step forward

Tesla delivers first Model S a little early, EVs take a big step forward

Tesla had originally pegged the Model S' first delivery for June 22nd. At least one owner, though, is getting an early treat: one of venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson's namesake managing directors, Steve Jurvetson, just picked up his red-hued EV sedan in the San Francisco Bay Area. He can also rightfully claim to have the very first production Model S anywhere, as he's since posted photographic proof on Flickr that his car was the earliest to have completed the factory run. The arrival is no doubt a milestone for taking purely electric cars into the mainstream. Even so, we'll admit that we're just hoping Jurvetson shares what it's like to live with Tesla's four-door -- both out of curiosity as well as a vain attempt to live vicariously through someone who's had more than a test drive.

U.S. iPhone adoption growth remains strong, Android slowing down

U.S. iPhone adoption remains strong, Android slowing down

ComScore has published their research of the U.S. smartphone market for April 2012, and found that Samsung is still the top U.S. mobile manufacturer, while Apple is trailing in third place. Still, Apple is moving in on LG's second place; U.S. mobile market share (that includes smartphones and dumbphones) for the iPhone has grown 1.6 points to 14.4%, while LG has shrunk half a point to 19.2%.

The research also indicates that among smartphone platforms, Android experienced its lowest adoptions rates in Q1 2012 since 2009. That's good news for iOS, which is still enjoying steady growth, but has resulted in plateauing smartphone adoption overall. Apparently there were 300,000 new smartphone users every week in April, compared to 1.5 million every week in November. That is, indeed, a sharp dive. At this rate, iOS is growing nearly as fast as Android; during the same three-month period, iOS grew 1.9 points, while Android climbed 2.2. Of course, the installed base of Android users in the U.S. is still significantly higher than iPhone, thanks in no small part to the army of manufacturers churning out new devices every day. As you might expect, the BlackBerry OS market share is down yet again, currently commanding 11.6%, down 3.6 points since January.

I still find it hugely impressive that Apple is competing so strongly in the overall mobile market in the U.S. Samsung and LG are churning out tons of very affordable phones, both simple feature handsets as well as smartphones, while a very small selection of iPhones (including one from 2009) can still give them a run for their money. As for Android growth petering out, I wouldn't count on it being permanent just yet, since U.S. smartphone penetration is set to cross the 50% line this summer, meaning there is still a healthy number of dumbphone users that need to upgrade.

How many of your friends don't own a smartphone? Do you figure Android has any particular appeal to them, or does Apple have a big head start when it comes to being noob-friendly?

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn't really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch 'soon,' and there's no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,' Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it's all about fulfilling Maslow's hierarchy of needs. "CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."

Our concern, of course, is that it's very nearly April 1. We're also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we've grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage -- or overage -- or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you'd never know.

Let's not forget this is the Internet we're talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as... your dad, perhaps?

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Apple Job Listings Suggest Dock Connector Innovation Is in Its Future

Could a future iPod or iPhone dock connector look like this? Image: Jon Snyder/Wired

Two yet-to-be filled job listings posted in mid- to late-2011 hint at a a very specific future Apple innovation. And it’s one that has been widely speculated upon: dock connectors.

The job postings, Connector Design Engineer and Product Design Eng – Connector, are both “responsible for managing multiple connector designs and developments in support of the iPod product lines.” The positions also entail adapting existing connectors to new technological developments and designing entirely new dock connectors specifically for the iPod line, which would logically translate to iPhones and iPads as well.

The jobs were posted in March and September 2011, respectively, but both are currently unfilled. They require a BS in a related engineering discipline (electrical, mechanical or material science) and a few years’ experience with 3-D CAD design and offshore product manufacturing. The ability to speak Chinese is “a plus.”

The 30-pin dock connector on iPhones, iPads and iPods has been the de facto design since it was introduced on the third-generation iPod in 2003. That’s almost as ancient as the click wheel design that debuted on the iPod in 2001.

“Apple has been using this connector for a long time and it’s always gotten reviews as being unwieldy and large and inconvenient,” IHS iSuppli analyst Kevin Keller told Wired. “If they’re going to introduce something new, the iPhone, because of the broad appeal and broad market, would be a good place to do it.”

Many feel — nay, expect — a dock connector redesign in the near future. And with good reason.

Recent photos suggest the dock connector will be shrinking in size, allowing for more space inside the device. Canalys analyst Chris Jones said that when Apple does inevitably change its dock, it will be a pain point for accessory manufacturers and users who have invested in dock accessories. But some iPhone dock manufacturers have started taking such a possibility into account with new designs aimed at future-proofing peripherals.

But Apple has a unique challenge when designing its iDevice dock connectors.

“Because Apple has used that connector for video output, audio output, USB connection, and charging, they are always going to have an issue with the pin count,” Keller said. “You just simply can’t go down to a simple five-pin microUSB and get the same functionality out of that connector.”

An Apple patent application published in January tries to get around that issue in a creative way. It describes a MagSafe-style dock connector, not unlike the one currently employed in MacBooks. Since Apple has a design, these engineers could ready a production version and coordinate with leads at Foxconn during the manufacturing process.

Another option open to Apple is to eventually utilize microUSB, the favorite of many Android phones and the closest thing to a standard smartphone charging port we’ve seen to date. While that implementation would be convenient for the majority of consumers, following the rest of the industry’s standards certainly isn’t the Apple way. Nor does it satisfy Apple’s pre-existing dock connector needs.

“Because of the functionality Apple uses that dock connector for, there are no industry standards suitable yet,” Keller said. “They would continue to be required to use a proprietary connector. We could see a smaller version of the existing dock connector, but still proprietary to Apple.”

That poses a unique challenge to Apple’s would-be connecter engineers and an even greater headache for accessory makers and Apple consumers.

Microsoft unveils Xbox SmartGlass, "second screen" functionality heading to Android

Android Central

Our buddies over at WPCentral are out in LA right now enjoying the Xbox keynote presentation at E3. Microsoft presentations wouldn't really interest us much, but surprisingly there was a specific mention of Android. It seems the newly unveiled Xbox SmartGlass feature will be compatible with Android.

It offers an Airplay-esque functionality, in that videos viewed on a tablet for example can be transferred over to the big screen and picked up where you left off. When viewing on the TV, the tablet then becomes a second screen, displaying additional content. An example shown off was with popular series Game Of Thrones, where the tablet became a map tracking all the on screen action.

The keynote has just finished, so we'll be looking forward to further coverage on this from the guys over at WPCentral.
