The Galaxy S III this is not. On Tuesday, AT&T announced that it’s launching the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate on June 10 for $50 on a 2-year-contract.
This isn’t a flagship device capable of sending rumor mills into a tizzy. Nor is it a phone for tech writers to scrutinize in anticipation. On paper, the Exhilarate already looks very outdated, having more in common spec-wise with 2010′s Galaxy S and the T-Mobile exclusive Galaxy S Blaze 4G, two phones that sported 4-inch displays and dual-core CPUs, and ran on Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, which also made its debut in 2010.
Yes, the Exhilarate runs Android 2.3, an almost unthinkably outdated OS in this day and age of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). But on the up side, the Exhilarate features a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Scorpion processor. For cameras, the Exhilarate has a 5MP rear shooter capable of capturing 720p video, and a 1.3MP camera up front — the same set-up found on the Galaxy S Blaze 4G.
The new phone also features a back plate that AT&T says is made up of 80 percent recycled plastic. AT&T and Samsung didn’t specify how much RAM the Exhilarate has, or what the screen resolution is, and neither company was available for comment by press time.
Of course, the phone’s $50 price tag comes with a 2-year 4G data plan thorough AT&T, so while the entry price is less than that of the new $200 S III or the HTC One X, the monthly payout will be about the same.
